Community Spotlight

“This is Us” Series

The “Community Spotlight” is a series of posts for “This is Us” featuring families in our community and their journey to raise multilingual children.

We are so inspired by all the family stories you’ve shared with us.  We want to share your story with others who are also raising multilingual kids as well.  Through sharing tips and experiences, we hope families will feel that it is possible to add Chinese as part of their home languages.

Our Parent Spotlight this month will feature Juliana!

Juliana is from Vancouver but now lives in New Zealand.  She shares with us some of the reasons she's trying to teach her little one Cantonese. =)

         Meet Juliana!

Hi Juliana! Thanks for agreeing to be a part of our Parent Spotlight. Could you tell us a bit about yourself and your family?

Hi! I'm Juliana, and I'm on a journey to reconnect with my Cantonese roots while learning the language myself and teaching it to my toddler.

What are some of your goals?

My hope is that we’ll learn to read Chinese characters together. More than anything, I dream of the day my son can chat comfortably with my parents in everyday Cantonese.

What motivated you to start teaching Cantonese at home?

It's part of our heritage and cultural identity: My son is 100% Cantonese Chinese, 100% Canadian, and 100% Kiwi.

Do you have any rewarding moments to share?

Yes! Proud and rewarding moments are when he chooses a Cantonese book to read for bedtime story.

What are your favourite books to read together with your child?

We like:

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with us, Juliana!
